Ex-Ghana midfield maestro Michael Essien has recounted winning Ligue 1 player of the year ahead of his teammate in 2005.
The 37-year-old hard tackler enjoyed a wonderful 5 seasons in the French league with Bastia and Lyon, in 2005, Essien saw his performance rewarded as he was voted the league’s best player ahead of his team mate Juninho
Speaking to Simplycarol8 on Instagram the former Liberty Professionals narrated the moment
“I was happy, winning the best player in France at that time against my own teammate Juninho [Pernambucano] was great he was a magician, he can do anything with the ball so to be ahead of him was something quiet great”
At Lyon, Essien won back-to-back league titles in 2003-04 and 2004-05
In 2005, Essien signed with premier league side Chelsea for £24.4 million transfer fee and, at the time of his signing, was the most expensive African footballer in history.
